Exclusive and eternal
"...Our guide was Lord Charles FitzRoy, whose ancestors had been guided round Europe on countless Grand Tours in the past. What would they have made of this change of roles, I wondered as we strolled around the Vatican on a private visit that evening. We entered through what Lord Charles described as the "tradesman's entrance", sped past some "inferior tapestries", through the Gallery of Maps and into the Sistine Chapel.

As we learned about this "epitome of the High Renaissance style", and strained to take in Michelangelo's masterpiece 60ft up and tantalisingly out of reach, one of the group lent over and whispered: "Charles sets in in context so well". And it was true—he seemed to know instinctively which nuggets of detail to include and when to ease back on the cultural pedal..."
