have one lasting picture of the specialist tour with which I travelled
to Western Sicily. This was the sight of our guide and lecturer, Lord
Charles FitzRoy, striding into the road in the historic centre of Palermo
and languidly raising a hand to stop a tough-looking Sicilian biker and
ask for directions. We had momentarily taken a wrong turn and missed
the Museum of Archeology. However, within a minute we had reached our
destination and were being shown around by the director.
Although we rarely lost our way, the moment summed up the very English quality of the tour and the privileged access we had to important buildings and sites. The tour was organised by Fine Art Travel, of which Lord Charles - art historian, author and son of the Duke of Grafton - is chairman...
