...With royal palaces galore and with houses of extreme idiosyncrasy as well as chaste classicism – usually painted in pretty-as-a-picture pastel colours – there are umpteen beauties to stop you dead in your tracks. We were also to discover the seemingly surreal survival of grandees in these vast and beautiful buildings, living on a scale and in a style that is seldom to be found in Britain today.
