The fortified Saxon churches, some dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, are one of the most extraordinary architectural survivals in all Europe. They are encircled by massive walls, within which the inhabitants and animals of a whole village could shelter from invaders, for this was once the frontline of Christendom.

In contrast with the fortified exteriors, the interiors of these churches are peaceful sanctuaries, with fine altarpieces and carving. Two of the best examples are the churches at Viscri and Malancrav, famous for their wonderful architecture and murals.

Equally remarkable is the hunting lodge of the Apafi princes, rulers of Transylvania in the 17th century. On this tour we will venture well off the beaten path and see the remarkable restoration that has been carried out on these wonderfully romantic buildings.

This is a chance to recapture a rural idyll which has all but disappeard from Western Europe. No wonder the Prince of Wales has become so involved and personally owns a house in this charming and unspoilt region.

Cost	£2,275 This includes Full Board, all lectures, coach trips and entry fees. We reserve the right to adjust the price should there be a significant alteration in the rate of exchange. Please note that the cost of air travel is not included.

Flights	Please let us know if you would like to travel as part of the group and we will advise you of the return flights we have selected for this tour.
Hotel	We will stay in the guesthouses renovated by the Mihai Eminescu Trust in the villages of Malincrav and Viscri. These are village houses simply but comfortably restored and while the accommodation will not be as luxurious as the five star hotels we use for our other tours, we will endeavour to provide en-suite bathrooms wherever possible.
Single Rooms	There will be a supplement of £100 for single occupancy of a double room.
