Vienna

Vienna

18th - 23rd April 2012

5 nights

Lecturers: Count Gustav Ortner and Charles FitzRoy

2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt. To honour the occasion, a series of exhibitions are being held in Vienna, where he painted so many of his finest works. This will give us a wonderful opportunity to study the Art Nouveau movement in which Vienna played such a key role.

Richard Strauss was a contemporary of Klimt and we will be attending his Rosenkavalier in the State Opera house. The old imperial capital of Vienna has much else to offer: splendid Baroque architecture, and magnificent collections in the major museums, notably the unrivalled Old Masters in the Kuntshistorisches Museum.

The old city centre is a very rewarding place to wander through. There are many survivals from the time when Vienna was an imperial capital and we will be visiting fascinating private houses, both in the city and out in the countryside by the river Danube.
