Western Sicily is one of the richest cultural areas in the whole of Europe. The Greek temples of Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento, in magnificent settings, are among the most complete in existence.
We are very fortunate in having the famous classicist Robin Lane Fox to bring them vividly to life, and to explain how these city states once surpassed in wealth Athens and Sparta.
1,500 years later the Norman kings of Sicily made Palermo the most civilised city in Europe, with a unique synthesis of Latin, Byzantine and Arab cultures. They decorated their churches with magnificent mosaics, notably those in the cathedral of Monreale, one of the most remarkable buildings of the entire Middle Ages.
Palermo is a fascinating city. Hidden within its back streets are splendid Baroque palaces where we will be entertained to lunch and dinner by descendants of the Sicilian nobility who originally built them. We will be seeing the sumptuous ball-room chosen by Visconti as the setting for the ball scene in the film of The Leopard, whose author, Giuseppe di Lampedusa, lived nearby.
