In conjunction with EORTC. The price of the tour will include a donation of £1,500 per person to the charity

27th September - 2nd October 2013

5 nights

Lecturers: John Julius Norwich and Charles FitzRoy

We have been asked by EORTC (the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer) to organize a special tour to Istanbul.

The city, overlooking the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, enjoys one of the most splendid situations in the world. It abounds in fascinating mosques, palaces and museums.

For 1,000 years the Byzantine capital of Constantinople was the richest city in the world, and the great basilica of Hagia Sophia was the greatest church in Eastern Christendom. The achievements of the Byzantines will be brilliantly captured by our star lecturer John Julius Norwich. Their Ottoman successors were great patrons of the arts, and created an equally brilliant civilization, centred on the sultans’ palace of Topkapi, with its fascinating and mysterious harem.

We have arranged special access to the main museums in the city, with their wealth of works of art. In addition, we will enjoy splendid dinners in two of the most magnificent private houses in the city.

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer

EORTC, based in Brussels but not part of the EU, is an independent international organisation which conducts clinical research to find and prove better treatments for cancer. There has been much progress and more is in prospect. For instance in 1970 the long term survival rate for children with leukaemia was zero and now is 80%. For Hodgkin’s disease the figures are 10% in 1970 and 85% today.

Oncology stands now at the start of a new wave of progress. The ability to analyse the DNA of individual tumors has opened the way to bespoke treatments selected to offer the individual patient the best prospects for survival and quality of life. EORTC is at the forefront of this major advance.

No new or amended treatment for cancer may be used in medicine until a trial involving patients has been conducted successfully. These trials form the main part of EORTC’s work. It is the foremost organisation in the field of international, interdisciplinary trials. There are many cancers where no country in Europe has enough patients to conduct trials on its own. EORTC does this, and thus removes a bottleneck to progress, including for rare cancers.

The results of most EORTC research, notably the findings of trials of new treatments, are published and thus are available to oncologists for treatment of patients, old and young, poor and prosperous, across the world. The international standard treatments for various types of cancer have been improved and established by EORTC’s work.

In running trials EORTC works with its unique network of 300 research institutions in 29 countries. Two thousand scientists, clinicians and other experts are involved. Six thousand patients enter trials each year.

The pharmaceutical industry will not fund the many trials where it has no commercial interest. Yet these trials often concern promising new therapeutic strategies and new combinations of surgery or radiotherapy as well as drugs. They are funded independently, with the help of the EORTC Charitable Trust. The funds raised for cancer research by our tour to Istanbul in autumn 2012 will go to this essential work.
