A Private Tour to Rome

£1,700 per person for a minimum group of 20 people

The price will include:

  • Three nights bed and breakfast at the five star Hotel Inghilterra
  • Two dinners and three lunches
  • Guiding and lecturing by Charles FitzRoy
  • All entry fees and private visits
  • Transport during the tour including airport transfers for the recommended flights

Please note that the cost does not include the air fare from London to Rome but we will be recommending specific BA flights for those who wish to travel with the group.

Schedule

Thursday October 10th

We will explore the area around our hotel on foot, including the Spanish Steps, the most spectacular staircase in Rome, and the Piazza del Popolo, and see Caravaggio’s magnificent altarpieces in Santa Maria del Popolo.

Friday October 11th

Palazzo Colonna
The vast, sprawling Palazzo Colonna, the seat of this ancient Roman family, is filled with treasures: the apartments of Princess Isabelle, and the famous Galleria, the most splendid Baroque room in Rome, with frescoes glorifying Marcantonio Colonna, victor of the battle of Lepanto.

Capitoline Museums & View of the ForumCapitoline Museums & View of the Forum
The Capitoline museums, housed in the Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo’s, contain a magnificent collection of classical sculpture, including the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and the Dying Gaul. The tabularium affords a breathtaking view over the Forum, the historic heart of ancient Rome.

Lunch in a Private Palazzo
Lunch in a splendid 16th century palace filled with fine furniture and Old Master paintings hosted by the owner, a distinguished member of the Roman aristocracy. It gives us an excellent opportunity to sample life in a grand Roman palazzo.

Palazzo Doria Pamphilj Palazzo Doria Pamphilj
This beautiful Palazzo houses one of the finest picture collections in Rome, well displayed in the grand Baroque state rooms. Masterpieces include Velazquez’s Portrait of Innocent X (1650) and three youthful works by Caravaggio.

Saturday October 12th

Sistine ChapelSistine Chapel
We will have an early morning, private visit to the Vatican culminating in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo’s ceiling, painted for Pope Julius II, and his monumental but sombre Last Judgement represent the summit of Renaissance art.

St Peter’s Basilica
The two architects most responsible for the greatest church in Christendom were Michelangelo, whose beautiful Pieta is housed in the interior, and Bernini, whose work includes his astonishing Baldacchino and Cathedra, tombs of several popes and the superb Piazza.

Lunch will be in a family-run trattoria.

Piazza Navona
The most perfect Baroque square in Rome, centred on Bernini’s spectacular Fountain of the Four Rivers facing the church of Sant’ Agnese. The nearby Pantheon is the greatest surviving monument of antiquity in Rome. Built by the Emperor Hadrian, it still possesses one of the largest domes in existence.

Caccia ClubDinner Caccia Club
The Palazzo Borghese is the most magnificent setting for any club in Italy, or indeed in all Europe. The waiters still wear 18th century knicker-bockers.

Sunday October 13th

Villa BorgheseVilla Borghese
The spectacular collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese includes Canova’s nude statue of Pauline Borghese, sister of Napolean, astonishing sculpture by the young Bernini, paintings by Caravaggio, Raphael’s Deposition, and Titian’s beautiful Sacred and Profane Love.

Villa Medici
Villa Medici has the best surviving Renaissance garden in Rome. Iit stands high on the Pincian hill, with a superb view over the city. A casino contains charming frescoes of birds by Zuccaro from the 1570s. The Villa now houses the French Academy.

Lunch in a restaurant in the historic centre.

Private coach to Rome airport for the return flight to London.
