The Kingdom of the Sun, as John Julius Norwich has so aptly named the Norman kingdom of Sicily, is one of the glories of mediaeval civilisation. The mosaics that the Norman kings commissioned for the magnificent Cappella Palatina and Monreale Cathedral are unsurpassed.
The area around Palermo contains splendid monuments, notably the evocative Greek temple of Segesta, standing in a fold in the hills. Within Palermo itself there are a number of beautiful palaces built for the Sicilian nobility, with Palazzo Gangi, used by Visconti for his unforgettable film of the Leopard, holding pride of place.
