The Artistic Splendour of St Petersburg

Friday October 8th to Thursday October 14th 2021

Lecturers: Charles FitzRoy and Elena Gavrilova

St Petersburg is the most magnificent stage set on earth. The boldness of Peter the Great’s vision, creating a city out of a swamp on the shores of the Baltic, still induces a feeling of awe. Everything about the city displays the magnificence of his vision: the splendour of the palaces erected by Peter and Catherine the Great, the extraordinary wealth and magnificence of the art housed in the Hermitage, and the lavish decoration of the city’s churches.

We will sample something of the rarified lifestyle so brilliantly portrayed in the novels of Tolstoy at a production of the world-famous Russian ballet and a private visit of the Leonardos and Rembrandts in the Hermitage. The palaces surrounding St Petersburg, miraculously restored after World War II, show a similar grandeur of vision: the mighty fountains of Peterhof, the Baroque extravaganza of Tsarkoe Selo and the elegance of Pavlovsk, surrounded by parks filled with romantic pavilions and follies.
