Naples, Pompeii and Paestum

Following the great success of our recent tours to Sicily, Robin Lane Fox is leading us to the evocative site of Pompeii, an ideal time to visit the ruins following the blockbuster exhibition on Pompeii and Herculaneum at the British Museum.

We will also be visiting the magnificent Greek temples at Paestum, one of the great sights of Southern Italy, and the extraordinary collection of antiquities in the Archaeological Museum in Naples, a great favourite of Robin’s, particularly the famous Alexander mosaic of the battle of Issus.

Naples contains much else of interest: superb Baroque churches, and one of the best collections of Old Master paintings in Europe in the Capodimonte Museum. One of the highlights of the tour will be private visits to some of the great Neapolitan palaces, with their wonderful art collections, and to delightful villas in the nearby Campania, where we have been invited to lunch and dinner by the owners.

Hotel: The first four nights will be spent in Naples at the elegant five star Hotel Vesuvio. All our rooms will have views of the sea and the romantic Castel del Ovo. We will then spend two nights at Paestum, at the Tenuta Lupo, a country hotel with swimming pool a few kilometres from the temples.
