Rome

With the polymath Robin Lane Fox to guide us, we begin by looking at the finest buildings and sculpture in ancient Rome.

These masterpieces have exerted a profound influence on later art, in particular the paintings, sculpture and architecture of Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini in the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

We have arranged a number of really spectacular private visits, including some superb collections housed in private palaces where we will be entertained by the ancestral families.

As well as being an authority on ancient history and art, Robin also has a passion for gardens. Outside Rome we will be visiting the famous and influential water garden of the Villa Lante. We end the tour with a private lunch in the English-style garden at Ninfa, which is widely considered to be the most romantic garden in Europe.

Hotel: The Grand Hotel Inghilterra is our favourite hotel in Rome. Combining 5 star luxury with a traditional, family-run atmosphere and a brilliant position close the Spanish Steps, this is the perfect base for exploring the centro storico.
