The Medieval Wonders of Ravenna and Bologna

The superb quality of the mosaics in Ravenna is one of the wonders of the Middle Ages. John Julius Norwich, with his unrivalled knowledge of this period, will explain Ravenna’s close links with the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople, creating a civilisation superior to anywhere else in Italy, and reflected in the beauty of its churches.

We will base the tour in the ancient university city of Bologna, which contains the best preserved mediaeval centre on mainland Italy. There are wonderful works of art set back from the handsome, arcaded streets: early Christian churches, the finest anatomical theatre in Europe, and palaces and churches decorated with magnificent frescoes by the leading masters of the Bolognese School.

Outside Bologna we will be visiting a number of beautiful villas still privately owned where we will be entertained by the owners.
