The Splendour of Baroque Naples

Naples is one of the great Baroque cities of Europe. The exuberant extravagance of Neapolitan sculpture and architecture exactly matches the effervescent nature of the Neapolitans themselves.

The acclaimed art historian and author Charles FitzRoy, is an ideal guide for this tour with his in-depth knowledge of Italian history, art and architecture. We can explore the magnificence and splendour of Naples’ palaces, including that of the fascinating Emma Hamilton. Many of these palaces are still privately owned, and we will enjoy the great privilege of dining with the owners. Neapolitan painting owes its inspiration to Caravaggio. There is a superb collection of paintings in the Capodimonte Museum, while Caravaggio’s Seven Acts of Mercy, still hanging in the chapel of the Misericordia, is perhaps the greatest 17th century painting in Southern Italy. We will include a visit to the world-famous Archaeological Museum with its spectacular finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Crossing the beautiful Bay of Naples, we will visit La Mortella on Ischia, the famous garden created by Russell Page for William and Susannah Walton.
